January 19 Fiordland National Park – South New Zealand

Today is/was our day for exploring the fiords of South New Zealand: Milford Sound, Doubtful Sound and Dusky Sound. We were very much looking forward to the expected beauty, and did get to experience one of the three sounds – the other visits were spoiled by high winds and thus dangerous seas.

Around 10am the boat entered Doubtful Sound after having to skip the popular Milford Sound due to the conditions. Although it was raining it was a light rain and we are able to walk around the outside of the 3rd deck and enjoy the views. There were large and small mountains on both sides of the boat and many, many waterfalls – never have I seen so many at once. The photos show how misty and sometimes foggy it was, but the visit was beautiful and special for about 90 minutes. Then the weather worsened with more rain and winds so we are not visiting the other fiords today.

Instead we’ll play some bridge, I’ll practice my uke in our room, and maybe see a movie and read books. Oh – where’s that song… “You can’t always get what you want…!”
