In the morning we visited the Chinese Garden of Friendship, a garden built for for Australia’s bicentennial to “celebrate the role of the Chinese community in developing Australia’s commercial and social structure since the early 1800’s”. The garden is modeled after Ming dynasty private gardens and was a joint effort between New South Wales and a city in Guangdong ( was called Canton in English). The garden was multi-levels with traditional buildings, pools, waterfalls, pools and beautiful plants.

Later on we took the tram up a few stops to explore a relatively new area of Sydney called Barangaroo. In the past it was a large yard for importing cars manufactured overseas. Now it is contains new high end buildings and a large reserve at the end of the point. Walking along the pier we again met Canadians! – the father lives in Sydney.

Walking out of the park we found ourselves on a hillside of much older, unique buildings including Sydney’s first hotel !

This was a busy day… Later we went to a performance at the Sydney Opera house…see March 4 part 2!
