March 5 – Sydney and Manly Beach

Everyone we talk with about Sydney asks if we’ve been to Manly Beach – finally we can say ‘yes’. Manly is a large town at the north end of Sydney harbor and has a beautiful beach and a nature preserve as well. Because of Sydney’s amazing public transportation system we could get there by ferry using the same payment method used for the trains and the tram. The ferry ride through the harbor was lovely, as was the town and beach of Manly.

We decided to follow a walking path to a small beach and up small mountain before enjoying the main beach. We found our way up the mountain but couldn’t figure out how to loop down until we met some men who do the path on a regular basis. They became our guides and we ended up walking a bit more than we planned on but it was definitely worth it.

After finding the way with our new friends, the nature preserve was much different than the mountain – very dry right now although there was a small pond on top. It was hot and I was so glad when we reached the cafe on top!

We were able to take a bus back to the beach and enjoyed it for a while before going back to Sydney on the ferry.
