February 19 – Rockhampton to Airlie

We had a long drive today but we enjoyed a few stops along the way. I knew Clairview was on the ocean so we stopped there for a rest. It was low tide and the blue of the ocean was very far away, so no wadding today – just a different kind of walk. I hadn’t seen such low tide before. Also Dirk discovered Rainbow lorikeets in a nearby tree and we struggled to get some good photos.

We stopped for lunch at the Flaggy Rock Cafe on A1 near Camila – loved the name and it was a good stop for us. We met a couple there from the area that gave us suggestions for places to see and stay as we head to Cairns.

I almost forgot to mention sugar cane fields. For most of the day we saw huge fields of sugar cane along the road – impressive! It’s a major crop here – we didn’t know.

We were surprised at the road to our next stay – crazy up and down hills! Again! But the resort (yes – resort this time) is really nice and unique with the rooms looking like boats like our trawler from our Great Loop trip. There’s a pool open all hours and a restaurant a short walk down the hill.
