February 6 – Melbourne to Peterborough, Victoria

We’ve been told we shouldn’t miss the Great Ocean Road, a long and winding road west of Melbourne for about 240 kilometers. Trusting that the scenery would be worth going a little out of our way, we headed out after picking up our rental car. Since we were starting late due to rental delays we first headed for attractions close to where we would be staying the night.

As we drove along the westerly M1 highway it became smaller and more like a country road. We went around a bend and Dirk saw many, many white birds sitting in trees nearby. We stopped and yup – 100’s of white parrots sitting together in 10-20 trees – 20+ in some!

The Great Ocean Road was built by WWI survivors to honor the memories of those that were lost. It allows the magnificent cliffs along the shore to be accessible for viewing and sometimes walking down to the shore. We enjoyed the rough beauty of the area, one stop after the other. The most well known is called the 12 Apostles – we counted 8! And tons of tourists.

We continued on and saw many more awe inspiring vistas…

After checking into our lovely modern hotel near the beach we had dinner then walked up to a lookout that also had a great sunset view. Nice!
